Big Project Update

The heavy clearing is finished on Phase One! The Crew worked all day Saturday, and got the edges of the plot defined, and the last of the big trees taken down. Sweet Cleo and I jogged up yesterday evening to get a good look.

No way to give you any perspective on it, really…it’s just a (mostly) clear spot, surrounded by heavy brush and covered in wood chips. The bushes left in the middle are blueberries; planted by the birds, not the humans. They’ve never been in full sun, and haven’t produced berries of any size or quality. They’ll get a good heavy pruning, and a couple of seasons to prove their worth before we decide if they stay or go…

All of the small branches, saplings, and vines were run through the shredder and left on the ground. Tree trunks too big to chip-up are cut to about four feet long, and stacked around the margins. They’ll spend the rest of the summer drying and providing shadyย hiding spots for small critters. Come fall, some of them will be used to make temporary raised beds for next year’s pumpkin patch.

At least, that’s the plan right now. If I say it out loud, it’s more likely to happen…

I did ask the guys to leave one trunk standing. In a few days, we’ll move the (currently non-functional) back field camera and its solar panel to this tree. Plenty of sun to keep the battery charged now! I heard the turkeys up there early this morning, and Hubby saw Our Doe and her twins last week…Fingers crossed for some photos soon!

  1. I know it feels good to have this clearing finished. Like Bam, I can’t wait to hear what is in store for this area.

  2. All the hard work has certainly paid off. Look at all of that space you have now! It will be something to see how you eventually utilize it — and an awful lot of work for you, too. But you’ve got all of those Free Fridays with nothing to do. Well, you had … ๐Ÿ™‚

    • If you need heavy work done, I’ve never seen anyone work harder, faster, or take as much pride in doing it right as the Brazillian guys who did this. Bar. None.
The crew chief brings his grandson to play with Angel sometimes, too… ๐Ÿ™‚
